November. Departure logged 6:52 A.M.
Five of us went down. I was on ballast and camera duty. The fifth seat filled at the last minute. The pilot, who also happened to be the director, ran descent from a game controller bolted to a plywood console, thumb steady on the stick like it was any other Tuesday. Two passengers sat forward, paying guests, nervous. The last seat belonged to the engineer, headset on, eyes on a laptop screen tracking hull strain in real time. That system was the whole safety case. Sensors bonded to the carbon fiber, listening for the popcorn acoustics the hull makes before it fails. Supposedly you could hear it echo through the hull as it did so.
The hull was carbon fiber. That was the first major flag. The material was wound and cured in a cylinder rather than pressed into a sphere. The founder insisted it had nothing to do with being cheaper to build that way. Every engineer who understood deep sea pressure vessels knew what that shape cost you in return. Two titanium domes capped the ends, bolted from outside once we were seated, so there was no way out until someone on the surface released us. The whole assembly was still logged as a prototype, which meant a thorough inspection of the hulls integrity, after every dive. This dive was its third without one.
Carbon fiber was chosen as it is light enough to keep the whole vessel buoyant without burning through power just to hold position. The material held up fine against a pull, against a stretch. Reason it is chosen in space programs. Compression was different. Compression was where it had never been proven, and depth was nothing but compression, stacked on itself, mile after mile, with no layer of the hull telling you how many times it could take that weight before it stopped agreeing to.
Two of the surface engineers had put their concerns in writing before we ever reached the platform. I'd read the email chain the night before—flagged, unresolved, forwarded twice. Their worry wasn't the depth rating. It was the material itself: carbon fiber doesn't fail the way metal fails, doesn't dent or bend as a warning first. It layers damage on the inside, invisible from the outside, and nobody had run the fatigue numbers past the third cycle. Three dives wasn't a track record. It was a sample size too small to mean anything, and both of them had said so, and both of them were topside now, watching a monitor instead of sitting where I was sitting.
I truly do question why I am entombed within this vessel. A choice I felt pressured to make on the fly. The director made it clear with their not so subtle hints, that if I did not take the fifth seat that on his return I would not be employed. I assume I was chosen due to my greenhorn status amongst the crew. A fresh graduate. Easily manipulated and strong armed.

Descent was slow. The light went from green to the color of a healing bruise, then to nothing at all. Every few minutes the engineer's laptop pinged—a status ping, back to the surface ship, three words: all good here. I watched him type it four times. Each time it took longer to send. Each time the connection bar on his screen dropped and climbed and dropped again.
At depth 900 meters, the first sound came through the hull. Not a knock—a tick, high and small, like a fingernail against a tooth. The engineer logged it without comment. Standard flex, he said. Expected at this pressure differential. Calmed the tension the sound created. Ensured everyone it was not the warning pops.
The static over our communications started around 1,400 meters. A hiss that layered itself beneath the surface ship's replies, present even in the silence between transmissions, present even when the channel should have been clean. I asked the engineer if it was the hull sensors. He said the array reported nominal.
By 2,600 meters the static turned to ticking, which had turned to rhythm. Two, then one, spaced like something counting. The pilot slowed our descent to listen and the rhythm slowed with him, matched his hand on the stick a half-second behind it, then caught up. One of the passengers asked if this was normal. Nobody answered fast enough for it to sound convincing.
The lights browned and dimmed in the hull at 3,100 meters. The engineer typed a message to the surface. I watched the send bar fill and stall at ninety percent and remain there. He typed it again. Same wall, same ninety percent, the cursor blinking against it like a pulse that had stopped moving anything. The tapping stopped. Replaced instead by a brief shake of the hull and a sound of the propellors in overdrive. The director frantically pressed every button of the controller. We remained completely still. I waited for the director to give me the signal to release the ballast for us to shoot to the surface. It did not come.
The forward passenger began to cry in hysteria, the way a child cries when the lights first go out and the dark hasn't been proven safe yet.
A face came into the forward port at 3,300 meters. Clear as day against the backdrop of the pitch black depth of the ocean floor. Human in the proportions, wrong in everything under those proportions. A neck without a joint in it, moving the way a length of rope moves when someone pulls it taut from one end. The eyes were dark all the way through, no white to them, fixed on the porthole, looking inside at us with interest.
A second one arrived without announcement, the way the first one had — no wake, no displacement, just present where it hadn't been. The two of them framed the hull between them, symmetrical, patient, the whole vessel held the way a jar is held up to a light to check what's floating in it.
The engineer's laptop still read connected. The strain array still read nominal.
I reached past him and typed it myself. MAYDAY. LOSS OF COMMS SUSPECTED. HULL CONTACT EXTERNAL. RELEASING EMERGENCY BALLAST. The bar filled. It stalled at ninety percent again, the exact same number, and held there. I typed the string of code to release the ballast. As with the communications signal, it did not complete.
A hand came into view. Six fingers, palm the width of a serving tray, and it did not grip the hull so much as rest against it, the flat unhurried weight of something checking whether a surface was warm. No pressure that the strain sensors could name. The array stayed green.
One of the passengers started praying, low, fast, the words running together. The pilot tried the ascent thrusters. The controller acknowledged the input—a small vibration under his thumb, dutiful, obedient—and nothing followed it. He tried again. Same vibration. Same nothing.
Everyone’s biggest fear synced at once. The first popcorn pop echoed through the metal hull. First it was a few seconds between them. Quickly, like a bag inside a microwave, those pops grew in loudness and in numbers.
The second hand joined the first, low on the hull, near the seam of the steel rings that held us inside. Not pulling. Not squeezing. The lightest grip it could produce.
I pushed the engineer off his cushion and got fully behind the laptop. All but the pilot and I were still coherent. Panic and the thought of death too much for the others to operate normally. I typed the call for help three more times, faster each time, my own hands doing most of the spelling wrong. SOS. HULL FILURE IMMNENT. SOS. HULL FALUIRE IMNENT. PLEASE RESPOD.
The forward passenger's hand found mine. I let her hold it. There wasn't anything else useful I could do. The message was not sent and even it had, they could not be saved in time.
After that realization, and with the group holding each other, there was only the waiting, and the waiting had its own sound. The popcorn pops climbed out of the hull's rhythm and into something with no gaps left in it, so close together it sounded fluid, the carbon fiber pleading its warning of failing. Nobody moved. Nobody spoke. The two faces stayed exactly where they'd been, evenly lit, unhurried, watching us like a zoo attendant.
The sound kept climbing along with the heat. The final warning of the air inside compressing. We kept listening to the submersible’s death rattle climb. That was all there was left to do—sit inside a hull at the bottom of the ocean and await our departure.
